Our Expectations

Discipline

Our goal is to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.  It is not the intent to remove any Scout from activities or Camp unless the safety of a participant is in question.  However, if circumstances of a disturbance create a severe disruption in the camp, the policy will be enforced.

All Scouts are expected to follow the Scout Oath and Scout Law.  A copy of the discipline agreement policy should be reviewed and signed by each and every participant and turned in his or her application.

The first time a Scout is disruptive or whose conduct is other than what is expected, his den leader shall take the Scout aside out of hearing range, but within sight of other adult leaders and Scouts, and discuss his behavior and any modifications needed.

The second time the Scout is disruptive the Scout will be separated from the den and escorted Headquarters (HQ) for an appropriate period of time. The scout will be counseled by a member of the Camp Administration.  Additionally, upon parent sign-out of that day, a note will be given to the parent/guardian regarding the behavior of the Scout.

The third time the Scout is disruptive, the Scout’s parents will be contacted by Camp Administration and appropriate action will be taken, including possible exclusion from camp.

Dress Code

Everyone (Scouts, Leaders and Staff) are required to wear their official Day Camp issued shirt each day.  This is essential in identification of authorized personnel at Camp.  If anyone forgets their T-shirt, we will have extra T-shirts on hand that can be purchased for $8 on a first come first served basis.

Everyone is required to wear his or her official  Day Camp name tag.  This is also essential in the identification of authorized personnel at Camp.  Name Tags will be collected at the end of each day and kept on-site.

Wear closed toe shoes – specifically sneakers or hiking boots.  You may want to send your scout in older sneakers as they will be taking walks in and near the creek. No sandals, flip-flops, tevas, crocs or other types of shoes that do not enclose the toes are allowed.  If a scout wears inappropriate shoes, they will sit at Headquarters (HQ) until a suitable pair can be delivered to the scout. This is for the scout’s safety.

All Scouts should use sunscreen daily.  Leaders are not allowed to apply sunscreen.  Preferably sunscreen should be applied before camp. Sunscreen can only be applied to a Scout by a Scout.

Bathing suits should be appropriate for the setting, no bikinis.  Dress comfortably and sensibly.

Electronics

NO ELECTRONICS DEVICES OF ANY KIND ALLOWED AT CAMP.  To keep it simple, we have a strict NO screen policy. We believe that being at camp is an opportunity for your scout to experience a world beyond home. This allows scouts to develop autonomy, independence, and a stronger sense of self. It allows them to make new friends, take responsibility for themselves,  problem solve, and mature a bit.

That means:

No cell phones, period.
No iPads, iPods, laptops, Nintendo DS, electronic “pets,” or other e-devices.
No video cameras and no digital cameras.

Not Fitness trackers, apple watches, or music players

We need your support and help so please do not allow your child to break the rules and take a cell phone to camp.

To send a very clear message about how strongly we feel about leaving cell phones at home, we have a zero tolerance cell phone policy. If we learn that any camper has a cell phone in camp, we will take it away and store it in our camp safe until closing of day to be picked up by a guardian.

COVID 19

Your safety and the safety of all our members, volunteers, and employees is the Mecklenburg County Council’s top priority. In light of COVID-19, we are taking additional precautions at camp on top of our long-established health and safety measures.

First, our camp directors and our council camp health supervisor, Dr. Joe Dore, is coordinating with state and local health departments in Mecklenburg, McDowell, Union and Cabarrus Counties as well as the CDC to ensure we are aware of and follow their guidance to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 at camp.

Our mitigation plan includes: [customize]

  • Pre-attendance education,

  • Health screening conducted by your unit prior to travel to our camp, including a temperature check.

  • Health screening upon your arrival at camp conducted by our camp health officers, which will also include a temperature check.

    • Note:  should anyone in the unit not pass the arrival screening, the entire unit will not be allowed to enter camp.

  • Limits on visitors in camp.

    • All visitors will be screen upon arrival before entry to camp.

  • Hygiene reminders throughout camp experience.

  • Extra handwashing /sanitizer stations throughout camp.

  • Dedicated staff to clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces and shared program equipment.

  • An emergency response plan that includes isolation and quarantine protocol should a person at camp develop symptoms of COVID-19 or other communicable disease.

  • Check-ins with each unit one week and two weeks after the unit leaves camp to determine if any participants have developed symptoms.

These precautions are important, but they do not remove the potential for exposure to COVID-19 or any other illness while at camp. Some people with COVID-19 show no signs or symptoms of illness but can still spread the virus, and people may be contagious before their symptoms occur. These factors mean that an infected person may pass the required health screenings and be allowed into camp.

We also know the very nature of camp makes social distancing difficult in many situations and impossible in others.

Information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that older adults and people of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions are at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19. If you are in this group, please ensure you have approval from your health care provider prior to attending camp.

We know that each staff member, volunteer, and Scouting family has a unique set of circumstances to consider when deciding whether to attend camp. We hope this information will be helpful as you make those choices.
